Things to do at Port Campbell

Most visits revolve around a Twelve Apostles light window, Loch Ard lookouts (beach steps only when open), and a western short-stop chain when energy remains. Mixing every pin into one Melbourne day is how groups get hangry on the highway.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees and official GORCAPA / Parks Victoria bookings are never affiliated.

Day one rule

One primary lookout hero (usually Apostles) + one soft secondary. Do not collect every Instagram pin on day one.

Beach & stairs reality

Gibson Steps and Loch Ard beach access are conditional. Verify open status; treat closed beach as a skip rule, not failure.

Base match

Port Campbell for all-round circuit + sunset returns; Princetown for pure Apostles proximity; Apollo Bay when pairing Great Otway rainforest on a second day.

  1. 1

    Twelve Apostles

High intent · boardwalk · Princetown corridor

Icon stacks, boardwalk platforms, parking reality and golden-hour strategy. Protect one primary light window — do not race every pin at the same minute.

  2. 2

    Loch Ard Gorge

History · lookouts · verify beach steps

Shipwreck story and gorge walls — lookouts first, beach steps only when officially open. Geological closures happen; never invent a descent.

  3. 3

    Gibson Steps

    Stairs · beach · ocean-active

Steep stairs to beach-level stack drama when open and ocean-safe. Mixed-fitness groups should treat the beach as optional.

  4. 4

    London Bridge (London Arch)

    Short stop · western circuit

Western lookout sequence starter — freestanding limestone and the permanent soft-cliff geology lesson. Short stop, barrier discipline required.

  5. 5

    The Arch & The Grotto

    Short stops · western sequence

Finish the western short-stop chain when energy remains. Wind, salt spray and wet platforms still apply — not a casual “extra five minutes” after dark.

  6. 6

    Sunset + Little Penguins

Dusk · wildlife etiquette · overnight base

Ethical dusk strategy at the Apostles: golden hour, blue hour, then quiet platform wait. Headlamps, no flash, base nearby when you can.

  7. 7

    Port Campbell township

    Town logistics · base hub

Harbour reset, food and fuel between lookout clusters. Best all-round base for Loch Ard + western arches + sunset returns.

  8. 8

    Great Ocean Walk (sample)

    Hard / multi-day · planning first

Multi-day coastal trail culture — not a casual afternoon add-on. Sample-day orientation only; full logistics on Parks Victoria.

What this park is not

It is not a theme park with guaranteed beach access at every named pin. It is not a safe place to freestyle beyond barriers. It is not realistic to “do everything” from Melbourne in one daylight window without fatigue cost. Treat it as coastal geology with high-volume tourism logistics — and you will enjoy it more.
