How long do I need?

Drive time from the Melbourne CBD to the Twelve Apostles is typically about 3.5–4.5+ hours each way depending on route (Great Ocean Road vs inland), traffic, stops and coach congestion. That is a published planning band — not a clocked departure from a field diary. The people who should not attempt a Melbourne day trip: anyone leaving the CBD mid-morning on a peak Saturday and still hoping for Apostles platforms, Loch Ard depth, western arches, dusk penguins and a safe night return.

GORCAPA and Parks Victoria publish visitor information for Port Campbell National Park. Day visitor entry is commonly free — but that is not the whole story for a Shipwreck Coast trip.

Camping and some facilities attract fees and require official bookings.
Helicopter scenic flights are optional paid commercial products — read inclusions carefully.
Pets are generally not allowed in national parks (assistance animals with published conditions only) — confirm on official channels.

Getting there

Most visitors approach via the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne (Geelong → Torquay corridor then west), or use faster inland options when time is tight. Plan roughly 3.5–4.5+ hours each way between the Melbourne CBD and the Twelve Apostles in ordinary conditions — more on peak weekends and public holidays.

Allow fatigue buffers — tourist traffic, wildlife at dusk, and wind that feels brutal on platforms.
Port Campbell overnight turns sunset + penguins into a memory instead of a dark highway risk.
Multi-base trips beat one exhausted loop trying to do Apostles, every western lookout and Otway waterfalls in one daylight window.

Fuel, food, medical — last town, not the lookout

Twelve Apostles platforms are not a service centre. Port Campbell is the practical last-town hub for fuel, food, toilets and beds on the Shipwreck Coast strip. Princetown wins Apostles proximity; Apollo Bay is an approach / Otway bridge. This is orientation, not a live directory — hours and which pump is open change. Emergencies: Triple Zero (000).

Families

Use toilets and snacks at the Apostles visitor precinct and in Port Campbell town before a second lookout cluster. Do not count on a kiosk at every western short stop. Nap windows in town beat a third stair circuit.

Early starts / sunrise

Last easy fuel and bakery/coffee before a dawn Apostles window is usually Port Campbell (or your Princetown corridor stay) — not on the viewing platforms. Fill up before you hunt for a bay at coach peak.

Closest to the icon

Princetown corridor for pure Apostles proximity (especially sunrise). Port Campbell for Loch Ard + western arches (London Bridge, The Arch, The Grotto) + sunset returns with town services. Apollo Bay for breaking the Melbourne drive or pairing Great Otway rainforest another day.

Medical & official info

Safety: cliffs, geology, Southern Ocean, wind

Port Campbell National Park is defined by soft limestone cliffs, undercuts and powerful Southern Ocean energy. Stay on formed paths and behind barriers. Soft edges fail without warning. London Bridge’s partial collapse is the coast’s permanent geology lesson.

Loch Ard beach steps — still closed for geological instability in official GORCAPA advice (remediation aiming toward later 2026; verify every trip). Upper lookouts may still deliver; never improvise a beach descent around a closure.
H5N1 avian influenza — official GORCAPA lookout pages may show a bird-flu banner. This is not a live status feed; follow any posted wildlife-distance and hygiene guidance on the day you visit.
Wet boardwalks, spray and extreme wind create slip and hypothermia risk even on mild calendar days.

Sunrise often means softer crowds. Midday is brightest and often busiest for coach turnover. Sunset / blue hour delivers drama and railing competition. Little Penguins — common planning range ~10–25 minutes after sunset. Winter stormsbring spectacular swell and harsher exposure.
