Is Port Campbell National Park free to enter?
Day visitor entry is generally free per publicly available GORCAPA / Parks Victoria guidance. Camping, some facilities and commercial products (including helicopter scenic flights) attract separate fees. Confirm current rules on the official park page before you travel.
How long from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles?
Plan roughly 3.5–4.5+ hours each way between the Melbourne CBD and the Twelve Apostles in ordinary conditions — more on peak weekends, public holidays and when lookout car parks are full. Build fatigue and dusk-wildlife buffers. Overnight is kinder than a smash-and-grab day trip.
Port Campbell or Princetown as a base?
Port Campbell for Loch Ard, western lookouts, food/fuel and sunset returns with town services. Princetown for pure Apostles proximity (sunrise and golden hour). Split nights with Apollo Bay when pairing Great Otway rainforest.
Are Loch Ard Gorge beach steps open?
Not always. Official advice has stated beach access steps closed due to geological instability until remediation. Upper lookouts may still deliver. Never invent a descent around a closure — re-check GORCAPA’s Loch Ard page on travel day.
Can I see Little Penguins at the Twelve Apostles?
Little Penguins return to burrows after dark near the Apostles area. A common planning range is roughly 10–25 minutes after sunset — wildlife does not punch a clock. Stay on platforms, no flash, headlamps for the walk back, slow night drive. Base nearby when you can.
