How to get there

1. West of Port Campbell near the London Bridge / Grotto corridor — follow official The Arch signs off the Great Ocean Road.
2. From Port Campbell township: a short coastal drive; budget parking + walk time rather than treating it as a drive-by glance.
3. Small car parks fill in peak season and late afternoons. Have a five-to-ten minute buffer; never park on soft verges or blind curves.
4. Do not leave bags visible — lookout car parks are opportunistic targets.

How to do it (step by step)

1. Park fully in a signed bay. Layer up — western lookouts are often windier than the township feels.
2. Walk the formed path to the main viewing area first for orientation.
3. Stay behind barriers at all times. Soft limestone edges and undercuts are the same hazard family as London Bridge and the Apostles.
4. Take your photos, give kids a clear “edge rules” reminder, then either continue to The Grotto or return to Port Campbell without inventing extra scramble routes.

Treat The Arch as a short, high-impact chapter in the western sequence with London Bridge and The Grotto — not a destination that justifies a Melbourne day-trip alone. It rewards calm five-to-fifteen minute visits more than rushed checklist energy.

A clean Port Campbell base afternoon often runs: Loch Ard or Apostles earlier → town food → London Bridge → The Arch → optional Grotto. Drive gaps are small; decision fatigue and wind chill are the real costs.

The Arch is soft coastal limestone and Southern Ocean energy doing what they always do: undercutting, opening, collapsing on geological timescales that can still feel sudden to humans. London Bridge’s partial collapse is the region’s permanent reminder — treat every unfenced edge as temporary.

Interpretive signs and on-site fencing exist for a reason. The photogenic frame is never worth stepping beyond a barrier for a “clean railing-free shot.”

Photography and wind realism

Phone cameras struggle with spray and contrast; wipe lenses often. Tripods must not block the path or push people toward edges. If salt spray is flying, protect gear and keep the visit focused.

If wind is brutal, keep the stop shorter. Soft limestone and Southern Ocean swell are the same safety story as every other Port Campbell lookout.

• Pairs naturally with London Bridge (nearby) and The Grotto for a half-day western circuit after a Port Campbell lunch reset.
• Overcast days reduce harsh shadow in the arch opening; side light carves shape better than flat noon sun.

• Skip racing here at the same golden minute as the Twelve Apostles; pick one light window as hero.
