Limestone stacks against Southern Ocean swell are emotionally loud; technical conditions are hostile. Salt spray, wind and sudden squalls punish exposed sensors and unsteady feet. A rain cover and lens cloths are not optional vanity kit on this coast.
Side light and blue hour often out-perform flat midday sun for shape and mood. Overcast days soften contrast on pale rock at Loch Ard and the western arches. Pick one golden window rather than racing every car park at the same minute.
Ethics, sequence and kit
Composition ethics matter as much as f-stops. Tripods must not block boardwalks or force people toward edges. Drones must obey all restrictions. Never step beyond barriers for a “clean railing-free frame” — London Bridge’s collapse history is the geology lesson written in tourist memory.
Practical sequence for shooters: one hero window at the Apostles (sunrise or sunset), soft-light Loch Ard or western arches midday if overcast, and permission to skip stairs when spray is horizontal. Secondary angles exist on formed platforms — use them before inventing risk.
Kit that earns its bag space: grip shoes, wind shell, microfibre cloths, camera rain cover, spare battery (cold drains power), and a headlamp for pre-dawn or post-sunset exits. Optional ND filters help long-exposure swell if wind does not shake the frame into mush.

Can I use a tripod on the Apostles boardwalks?
Only if it does not block paths or force people toward edges. Peak golden hour is crowded — a monopod or hand-held may be kinder. Safety and shared space beat the perfect long exposure.
Are drones allowed?
Follow all Parks Victoria / GORCAPA restrictions and aviation rules. Many park and coastal areas prohibit or tightly control drones. When in doubt, leave the aircraft packed.
